All 12 Hart food hygiene ratings published for September scored 5. Only two premises in the district are rated below 3, the fewest of seven neighbours.

Every one of the 12 food hygiene ratings Hart District Council published for September scored the top mark of 5. Three were pubs, two were nurseries and one was a school kitchen.

Across the whole district, only two premises are rated below 3. That is the lowest number of the seven councils around Hart, and the smallest share.

The figures come from the Food Standards Agency ratings register, downloaded this morning. The latest September rating on it is dated 11 September. The register only keeps each premises’ latest rating.

One caution on the clean sweep. Ratings of 0 to 4 are published three to five weeks after the inspection, to leave time for an appeal. A 5 can appear sooner. So some September inspections with a lower score may not be on the register yet.

The September ratings

All 12 were rated 5, which means “very good”:

Four of them scored “very good” on all three parts of the inspection: food handling, the building, and how food safety is managed. They are Caleb’s Coffee in Calthorpe Park, Monkey Puzzle in Hartley Wintney, and the Dog and Partridge and Food and Board in Yateley.

Basingstoke and Deane 1,046 777 74.3% 19
Rushmoor 637 465 73.0% 30

Rushmoor, which covers Farnborough and Aldershot next door, has 30 premises rated 2 or below. Hart has two. The shares leave out premises that are exempt or still waiting for a first inspection.

Hart’s full breakdown is 477 rated 5, 68 rated 4, 20 rated 3 and 2 rated 1. None is rated 0 or 2.

The two premises rated 1

A 1 means “major improvement necessary”. Both Hart premises on that rating were inspected this year:

The register shows the same scores for both. Food handling and the management of food safety were marked “improvement necessary”. The condition of the building was “generally satisfactory”.

Neither has a new rating pending on the register. A business can ask the council for a re-inspection once it has made the improvements, and can publish a right to reply alongside its rating. Both safeguards are set out by the Food Standards Agency.

Waiting for a first inspection

There are 52 Hart premises listed as “awaiting inspection”. These are usually new businesses, or businesses under new owners, that have registered with the council but not yet had a visit. Their rating will appear on the register after it.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Every rating in this article links to its entry on the register, which shows the date and the three scores.
  • A 5 is the norm in Hart. More than eight in ten rated premises have one, so a 3 or below stands out.
  • Ratings go out of date. A rating reflects the day of the inspection. If a place you use is listed as awaiting inspection, it has not been checked yet.
  • Report a problem. Concerns about a food business in the district go to Hart District Council’s environmental health team, through the Food Standards Agency’s report a food problem service.
